This photo has been taken from the Stairs Construction Work Task. This is another 2 week block. Our apprentices set out and and construct 2 different types of Staircasses. Once again we scale down the projects to make them more manageable. Pictured above is an External Staircase (Project 1)
Once the external Staircase has been completed the students move on to an Internal Staircse
This is a particularly interesting Work Task. Our apprentices are required to set-out and assemble a curved tread and riser at the base of the staircase.
The treads and risers and housed (and wedged) into the stringer. The stinger and hand rail are connected to the newel posts using mortice and tenon joints.
Hello Mark.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a very thorough lesson in stairs. We just teach external stairs. We had the Joinery component of Carpentry and Joinery available but there was no real interest. A shame because for most students it was their only opportunity to experience a well equipped work shop and the scope of work that this can encompass.
