Photo 1: The CIT ‘Building and Environment’ Outdoor building photo:
CIT is a large institution with campuses spread across Canberra. This photo shows the ‘Building and Environment’ section, just a small part of the Bruce Campus. We have approximately 540 students with 311 being Apprentice Carpenters. This is the ‘Barn’ area where the Carpentry and Cabinetmaking students prove their practical competency skills.

Interesting to see that so many of your students are carpenters. I have always thought Australia shared the British brickbuilding tradition.
ReplyDeleteHi Lars,
ReplyDeleteYou are right about Australia. We do not teach bricklaying at CIT but one of our competitors does. Most houses in Canberra are brick veneer which keeps both trades very busy. A good bricklayer can make fantastic money in Australia and so they should as it is hard work. A lot of the new houses are foam board with render over the outside for insulation purposes. Is it like that in Sweden
The constructiontype you describe, using foamboard have been popular for 10-15 years in Sweden but our rainy and wet climate have shown weekneses in this type of constructions. It seems that customers today begins to ask for more traditional wood or brick constructions.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying. A lot of the new systems do not seem durable enough and develop problems that cost money to fix.
