In our qualification - the Cert III in Carpentry & Joinery - there are 32 Units of Competency (subjects). We 'cluster' similar units together into Work Tasks. The picture above is from the Roof Frames Work Task.

In this example, our apprentices will come into the college for a two week block and they complete the following units:
  • Construct Ceiling Frames
  • Construct Eaves
  • Construct a Pitched Roof
In the work shop there are two different roofs types to be completed - a gable roof and also a hip and Valley Roof. The theory is quite involved in this work task. Technical drawings are used to develop roof shapes and there is also a theory and a calculations assessment.

    Hello Mark! Your pictures and text is very informative. It is interesting to compare the Swedish school system with the Australian: You have Units of Cometencies and Certs - I understand that your framework is very intricate. In Sweden the school system of upper secondary ecuation has three-ýear vocational programs. In building and construction you and you go on to training for an employer after your program in upper secondary education.

    Hey Mark! In Sweden, education to joiners and carpenters are two different programs, how is it in Australia.

    Really nice stairs, do the students also build furniture and things like that? Or are they mostly carpenters but need a little knowledge of these things as well?
