In order to start learning basic carpentry skills the students begin with simple tasks.
One of the first tasks is to build a mold.

It´s important to be precise otherwise the concrete block will have the wrong messurments

Hello again! How may students do you have in each group? Do you have the same amount when you have vocational theory classes as classes in the workshop?
ReplyDeleteAt the start the first year there is about 30 in each class but a few drop out. We try to make the groups smaller in the workshop but it´s not always possible.
DeleteDo your students work for an employer at the same time as they're studying? If so, what relationship does the teacher/school have with the employer, and how do you work together to support student learning?
ReplyDeleteNo they don´t. We feel that having the students in our workshop with teachers monitoring and supporting them gives them better skills. However the projects they work on are on commission from real customers and built to their specifications.
DeleteWhen do they do workplace based learning (APL)? In year two and three?
ReplyDeleteThe workplace training is divided into 5 periods. 2 weeks in year 1, 2x 3 weeks in year 2 and 2x 4 weeks in year 3.

ReplyDeleteWe have only carpenter students but they have to learn basic concrete work.

ReplyDeleteWe teach them to make simple molds and how to use readymixed concrete. The focus is on the carpentryskills but they also learn basic plastering and how to erect walls from concrete blocks.

Yes we do have all 30 in the workshop at the same time but there is usually 2 teachers and 1 assistent monitoring the students.
