This is a model truss system that the students have to design, draw, calculate and build for the subject ‘Erect Roof Trusses’. They must also in teams, install a large roof truss system.
How do the students start building a roof like this? Are they drawing to get all the lengths or are they calculating? Do you use CAD software or something like this?
We use drop saws, a stapler and srews and the students build these in teams of two. The pracs are demolished and we re-cycle what material we can. We calculate the angles using trigonometry and then we draw them to scale. The problem with cad is that it calculates everything and we want the students to get an understanding of the calculations. We only do 3 pretty simple drawings and there is deffinitely a point in construction where we step away from all calculations and drawings and the carpentry skills come into play, regarding the completion of a 'good job'.
Hi Lars, Yes this is definitely very common in Australia. Around the Canberra area most construction is brick veneer with a truss roof system and often pre-fabricated Wall frames as well.
Hello Barry. What tools and machines do you use when making this?
ReplyDeleteHey Barry! Do you have any trade theory in the workshop or implemented only in the classroom?
